What will version 3.0 give us ?
Some highlights :-
- Fully configurable via supplied GUI :-
- Size of deldir from 0 to 992 files in blocks of 31
- Performance tuning
- Enable extra directory fields
- Messages can be localised (German, French etc. etc.)
- Upto 992 files in the deldir
- Optional access counts, backup date, creation date etc. for every file.
- Interface to trace, monitor and error handling tools.
Don't shoot me if these are wrong or something else is included. The
details are still being finalised.
Note that the memory protection talked about on FLD's web site will not be
included !
When will 3.0 be released ?
May 1996, July 1996, Your guess. Just wait or email trefor@flevel.co.uk.
DO NOT POST THIS QUESTION TO THE LIST - WE DO NOT KNOW !
This is an example of FLD's bad practice. See the question about the
Valentines Day Offers for more details.
What versions of AFS will be available ?
Soon there will be three versions of AFS available. User 2.4, User 3.0
and Pro 3.0. They will be priced accordingly. I do not know what the
price of the new "middle" version will be.
Do we really have to pay to upgrade to V3 ?
Yes. Minor upgrades will continue to be free often after the six
month entitlement. Major upgrades involve a lot of development and
so will be chargeable. It looks like the cost will be 25 UK£.
Why have we not been invited to beta test 3.0 ?
I do not know.
FLD have had a number of beta versions but have not even seen fit to run them.
If you would like to know why please email trefor@flevel.co.uk.
Remember they are the distributor.
Do not let them pass the blame on.
It is ALL theirs !
What happened to the object oriented features of 3.0 ?
I do not know.
I believe that it has error, monitor and trace code that allows the user more
control.
Will I need to reformat my partition to use 3.0 ?
Yes. 3.0 is significantly different from 2.4. You will be required to
backup, format and restore your data.
It is likely that a tool will be provided to perform the conversion. It will
probably be strictly one way !
Is AFS available for any other platform ?
Not at the moment. Versions are in early development for the PC, Mac and
UNIX based platforms.
Can we exchange disks with other platforms ?
When the versions appear for other platforms yes. There is a problem
though. Different machines store binary data in different ways. This
may slow the system down a little bit when the disk is read on a
different platform than it was formatted.
When will we get DiskSalv4 ?
You will not. There has been a disagreement between FLD and Dave
Haynie, its author. DiskSalv4 will only ever support AFS in salvage
mode and even that will not be very good.
It is up to FLD to supply an equivalent tool to those of us who
purchased DiskSalv4 in advance of its launch. They are yet to do
this ! See the question on the
Valentines Day Offers for more details...
